The unhealthy stigma about healthy eating

Everybody who likes to eat healthily, or has specific dietary requirements knows the situation: you’re out with friends, they decide to get a takeaway, and you, with your ‘fussy’ eating, are left wondering what you’re going to do for your meal. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with having the occasional takeaway, but if you’re anything like me, a processed, stodgy meal does not appeal (I’m more into chocolate than burgers).

Unfortunately, there’s a sort of stigma around eating healthily, that you wouldn’t expect to find today, but most people have probably experienced it. Eating healthily is different to being on a diet; it’s a lifestyle, and what I think most people misunderstand is that most of the time, you would rather have that delicious salad from your favourite coffee shop, than fried chicken or a burger from your local takeaway. That Unicorn Frappe

Remember my post, Are diabeetus memes funny to diabetics?, well that Unicorn Frappe that everyone and their mother have heard about has a popular meme attached to it now.

diabetesunicornI gotta say, I carefully considered who posted this meme and if they were serious. Of course they weren’t serious. They were just commenting that the frappe has a lot of sugar. In fact, I’ll even agree the cotton candy frappe tastes like pure sugar. GAG. According to Starbucks online, a grande Unicorn Frappe is just about the same amount of carbs as my favorite grande Mocha Frappe. So the reality is that the Starbucks drinks just have a lot of sugar. Did I mention I can’t really tolerate their coffee anymore?

You can’t contract diabetes from them, though. Am I offended by someone saying you’ll contract diabetes from something sugary? Not as long as they aren’t serious. Eating sugar will not cause diabetes. There are many factors contributing to diabetes such as age, genetics, and lifestyle.  I hope people realize this when they post these memes.

I still insist that these memes are doing some good in the diabetes world. More and more people are realizing that lifestyle can contribute to type 2 diabetes and that diabetes is a disease that really sucks.

Yet I will say again, if you post these kinds of memes, I will always gauge how stupid you are. Comes with the territory. Sorry not sorry.

My Big Purse

I’ve become known for my purse at work. It’s big, I get that. Diabetics are known for big purses. I just muttered to them “It’s for medical reasons.”  My big grey studded floppy purse doesn’t even fit in the locker they provided me. I just ram it in and make it look half way decent.

It took awhile to even find this large purse, but when I finally found one I was so happy! It didn’t cost a fortune either, which was difficult enough. What they want for a purse is ridiculous.

It’s a great purse because it holds all my diabetic stuff. I even got a special little wallet/ purse to hold my supplies and it’s pink. Hooray girly stuff! It holds insulin, an inset, a needle, has a little trash bag, extra this and extra that. And can you believe that sucker isn’t big enough?! I still don’t have enough room for all my diabetic stuff in it, so things just float in my giant purse.

So after my big bag becoming a joke at work and realizing this bag really should be locked up (an insulin vial costs quite a bit) I decided to give in. I bought a diabetic purse. An actual purse made for diabetics exists! The purse is made by myabetic and is called the Cherise Diabetes Handbag. I got it in “Paradise Blue.”

The center is where I’ll carry all my goodies as shown above. It’s a more organized and concise purse, so I should be able to lock it up at work. It’s also a lot bigger in the center than my pink wallet/purse is. There are also two pouches on the sides of the center wallet to carry other things.

So take that! My purse won’t need to be the classic huge-as-hell-diabetes-bag. It will be an organized expensive purse.  Most women have those right? Ugh, my bag is still special.

Are the diabeetus memes funny to diabetics? Heck, is any joke about diabetes funny?

YES. I often find them hilarious if the person using or posting them knows the information isn’t true and they aren’t serious. When the person really thinks a big piece of cake causes diabetes it’s no longer funny and just makes the person look really ignorant. These jokes get diabetes attention and gets the conversation going. What if the person thinks the meme is serious? Well, I get to confront them and explain the truth about the disease. I see this as a win.

So many people get butthurt these days about everything. Everything is so offensive. I really enjoy laughing and I think laughing is great medicine apart from my insulin. I say go ahead and poke fun at diabetes.

Get yourself a man that can do both!

I was diagnosed in my second year of marriage. We two were driving along when I got the phone call that I was sick and had diabetes. He saw I was about to cry and immediately wanted to know what was wrong. My life changed that day.

I’ve heard from friends and the internet that relationships can be affected by diabetes. I wondered if my honeymoon phase would be over like so many other people and the struggle would begin. Other relationships have ended due to diabetes. The significant other didn’t want to put up with it, eat the same way, refused to learn anything, and showed no support. I’ve heard dating is a struggle too. My girlfriends have been dumped JUST because they were diabetic.

Luckily I got myself a man that is supportive. He’s driven me to the ER and goes to my endocrinologist visits. He eats like I do (if not healthier) and even went on the Paleo diet with me. He’s decided to go to medical school and minor in nutrition. I motivate him and inspire him. He does the same for me.. Maybe it’s due to my husband being European so eating differently comes natural and he already didn’t eat like an American.  Maybe that is Nordic culture. Yet- I’d like to think Americans can be just as supportive of their diabetic spouses.

It’s really important to find someone that can support your health. The priest does say “in sickness and in health” right?

Repost: How I Planned My Diet

Well, first of all it’s more like a lifestyle change and a way of eating than a diet.

Yes, once AGAIN I will be making a switch. For the millionith zillionith time. . . . . but BUT this time I designed it and it is already working. I feel better, feel satisfied and my blood sugars are going down. So what did I decide? I did what makes sense from my research.(Oh lawd did I read a lot) I used diets and ways of eating that already exist. I talked to people who know more than I do about nutrition. . . . and voila! So what ways of eating did I look at and what am I applying?

  • The Low Carb High Fat Diet: Like I said previously, this diet in it’s entirety cannot work for me. The high fat and protein amount my tummy just won’t handle. However, the idea is that you make your body use fat instead of carbs for fuel. This I understand to work for many diabetics. What did I steal? Low carb. Some of their recipes I can tolerate, others I can’t.
  • The Paleo Diet: Eating like our primal ancestors is the thought behind this way of eating. Fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, proteins, nuts and seeds are all part of the diet. Alcohol, beans, dairy, processed food, and grains are all no no’s. Gluten is eliminated for celiac disease and it’s lactose free. So what did I steal? I’m going to eat as little processed food as I can and reduced dairy intake. Also reduce my grain intake. I don’t need gluten free but I believe I am dairy sensitive. 
  • The FODMAP diet: This diet is meant for those with digestive problems and disorders. It reduces problems related to these issues by eliminating a series of different fermentable and poorly absorbed carbs that cause havoc in the gut and may cause different ailments. The lists of food are long and confusing honestly but make sense that they cause problems. I was told to go on this diet by a professional. So what did I steal? Everything but completely lactose free and completely gluten free. I will also be having whole grains when I eat grains. Otherwise- everything! 
  • Healthy Skin Diet : I complied a list of everything I could find that is good for healthy skin. What did I steal? I’m definitely going to be including these foods as much as I can.

So my guidelines in summary are:

  • no soy
  • limited garlic
  • limited onion
  • cooked veggies, berries and fruits
  • low lactose
  • low grain
  • low carb
  • lean protein

I’m not the same as your Grandma.

Close up of syringe with vial of medication isolated on white backgroundNot every diabetic is the same. I know we may have the same labels, but we are still not all the same. Doctors who think we fit in cute little categories all tight and snug are morons. Why is this?

  • We have different lifestyles. Athletes, health-freaks,  go-go-gos, carnivores, moms, . . . . . all different kinds of people have different needs.
  • We eat differently. I know for myself I grew up with veggies on my plate and a helping of meat.  I am careful of my carb amount on my plate but I love them. I’m Italian and love my pasta. Yet, there are vegan, vegetarians and people doing the paleo diet. There are different ways to eat, different cultures and different diets. Not all diabetics eat the same and there is no one diet that is a cure-all.
  • We have different tools. Some of us use what is called an insulin pen, insulin pumps, needle and vials or pill medication.  It all depends on what kind of diabetes is being treated, your lifestyle and your personal preference.
  • Our bodies are not the same. Our bodies respond similarly to medication, again, depending on the type of diabetes you have. Most diabetics respond to exercise by their blood sugar going up but mine goes down.  I need a lot of insulin where others might not. Depends on your own body.

 

Please don’t say I’m like Grandma or your cousin Timmy. I assure you, we are not the same.

No one likes a know-it-all, Hermonie.

I went to a Sugar Workshop, or seminar all about sugar. I learned a little I didn’t know before. Diabetics know a crap ton about sugar, as we ought to. I know how much sugar is in things and what it will do to the body. There is more sugar in food than most people realize.

But luckily, only 9.3% of people in the US need to be frightened, not add sugar to things, carb count, worry about insulin, possibly use pumps and so on. Diabetics are the ones who need to worry the most. Now, that’s not saying that you don’t need cut out some sugar and be healthier, you normies. Just remember that you do NEED some sugar and NEED some carbs your diet or else you could become hypoglycemic. It’s more of a balance act for a diabetic. We gotta work to be in a green zone with our sugars. Normies will naturally be in the green zone, even after that coke. Just too much coke and cake and cookies and extra sugar constantly will piss of your pancreas, leading to type 2 diabetes. That isn’t ALWAYS the case however. Many factors play a role.

This subject was explained in further detail. The dangers of “fake sugars” or as I call them the other Satan were explained to be dangerous and cause a list of nasty adverse affects such as fatigue, depression, epilepsy, anxiety attacks  . . How to read a label was explained too as well as to ACTUALLY READ THE LABEL. Yeah, reading the label on foods is a great way to start reducing sugar amount. Foods are sneaky and claim they are good for you when the label says otherwise.

Sugar can be addicting was a main note, which I know is true. I go through loops/stages where I binge due to going without sugary foods for a long period of time and loop back to no sugary foods and back again. Relapsing is the appropriate wording. Why? I am addicted to sugar and live here (US).  There was a mention of the diets for sugar detox- one in which I tried and could not maintain longer than a week. It was hell and I craved sugar like mad.

I could have added so much. Lectured and given all my wonderful insight. Likely would scare the shit out of people and make them never want to even look at a piece of cake again.

Yet-

I did not give my two cents. I did not poke my head in and shout “OH HEY BTW I KNOW ALL THIS BECAUSE I’M TYPE ONE!” Nope. That would be arrogant. So. What do you think happened instead? Great, someone who refuses to eat much sugar, carbs and most certainly doesn’t carb count and probably doesn’t even know how.  Slow clap. I mean, great she is taking care of herself but shit don’t be a know it all. Paleo isn’t the perfect diet. I know for a fact that they are still perfecting Paleo or else Primal would not exist. It won’t work for everyone and it didn’t work wonders for me.  I did not say a word to Paleo lady, though my Sicilian blood boiled.

I respected people wanted to learn about sugar and how much effort my friend put into this seminar. She did a wonderful job and had a lot of knowledge and facts to bring to the table. It was not a diabetes scarefest like I thought it would be. It was enlightening and good to hear.

Repost: My Relationship with Food

I had a trainer at my gym. I asked what he ate and it was super bland food. “How can you eat that?”

“Food is just fuel,” he said.

There are shows dedicated to the preparation of tastey food. Artists also know as cooks, bakers, chefs. . . . make awesome culinary creations just for us to nom on. Grandparents pass down recipes from generations. Countries have dishes of choice pertaining to their culture. Some even don’t eat certain foods due to religion. Food is more than just fuel. It’s a huge part of life.

I grew up with the smell of onions frying in olive oil and garlic. If you don’t know this smell, you’re not Italian. This is the beginning of making sauce. I remember making meatballs with my grandmother and having to make them into little balls. I also remember making sugar cookies every Christmas with my mom. We’d cut out shapes, bake them and then sprinkle them with sprinkles.  Sausage frying, rice in butter, the occasional horrible meatloaf, flinging peas, and chocolate chip pancakes are some memories of mine. They all remind me of people and good times.  I grew up with the idea to attach memories and to appreciate my food.

The concept that food is just fuel doesn’t make sense to me at all. God gave you sense of taste. Enjoy it in moderation!
